You can spend countless hours just replaying quests to see how different decisions change how the story pans out.
However, the sheer number of things to do does make up for these limitations. You are also limited in terms of game areas to explore and there are fewer customization options available. That being said, the game is a lot more like The Sims Stories series in the sense that you have an actual story to follow instead of the free play mode that put The Sims games on the map. You can play the game without having the Sims 3 installed. Though it does share a few nifty features found in The Sims 3, The Sims Medieval is not actually an expansion pack. After that, you’ll have your hands full passing edicts, surviving assassination attempts and fulfilling Quests depending on which character you are currently controlling. This is done by populating the kingdom with all sorts of Sims starting with the Monarch (which can be a King or a Queen depending on which gender you end up choosing) down to the local Bard. As the “Watcher”, or divine being in the sky, your job is to fulfill a Kingdom Ambition. You could say The Sims Medieval is an attempt at making a Sims game that is more akin to a single-player narrative-driven title.Build and manage your very own medieval kingdom complete with grand castles, a Beast in the Pit of Judgement and even good ol’ public humiliation through stocks. Even after you unlock freeplay by completing your Kingdom Ambition, you still won’t get the same amount of depth as in other Sims games. Even when you have a spouse and an offspring, they still remain NPCs. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it makes the game more approachable to new players and RPG fans. What mainly separates The Sims Medieval from the rest of the series is the fact that you can only control a single Hero Sim. This is a vastly different approach to the classic tried-and-true open nature of The Sims franchise. With up to 10 professions to choose from, there are numerous stories to explore with a variety of endings and outcomes to unlock and experience. The quests you accept, as well as the path you choose to complete each mission quest and your Sims’ overall performance during each quest, will also influence the game’s outcome.
